The Open Component Model (OCM) project, part of NeoNephos, has released OCM v2: a ground-up rebuild of its tooling stack, a new CLI, Kubernetes controllers, and Go bindings, all designed from the start for modularity, security, and community contribution. The full announcement is on the OCM blog; this is the short version for the NeoNephos community.

The original OCM libraries served the project well, but a monolithic architecture pulled in more than most users needed, was hard for new contributors to navigate, and made every change risk regressions elsewhere. OCM v2 answers that with a modular design, decoupled APIs, and a smaller dependency footprint. All three components, the CLI, the Kubernetes controllers, and the Go bindings, now live in a single monorepo, sharing one dependency tree and release cycle.

The full Pack, Sign, Transport, Deploy workflow is covered end to end: bundle software into component versions, sign them for provenance, move them between registries or across air gaps, and deploy them to Kubernetes via GitOps-native controllers. Every version created with v2 still implements the OCM Specification v2, so it stays fully interoperable with the existing stack.

A significant step forward is native OCI compatibility: component versions are now stored as standard OCI Image Indices, so a Helm chart or container image packaged in an OCM component can be pulled directly with helm pull or docker pull, no OCM-specific tooling in the path.

OCM v2 is not only a technical reboot. Since OCM joined NeoNephos, the project has established open governance: the OCM Technical Steering Committee sets the strategic direction, and a dedicated SIG Spec for the specification itself is in preparation.

The runtime has a dedicated home: SIG Runtime, the special interest group that maintains and shapes the OCM runtime: the Go bindings, the CLI, and the Kubernetes controllers. Its goal is to keep OCM components creatable, signable, transportable, verifiable, and deployable. Technical decisions are tracked openly through ADRs, and the SIG reports to the OCM Technical Steering Committee.

At the beginning of the year, the NeoNephos Governing Board solidified in our NNF Roadmap that 2026 will be marked with an addition to our visual identity. A few weeks ago, the Governing Board approved the new NeoNephos logomark. Since then, we have been implementing it step by step and today, we also want to officially share it with all of you.

It might seem like just a small change on first glance, but the new logomark is a significant step forward. It’s a direct reflection of our growing understanding of who we are as a foundation, who we serve, and the role we want to play in Europe’s cloud-native ecosystem.

When we started out under the NeoNephos Foundation last year, we were given our well-known wordmark by the Linux Foundation Europe. By then we were a newly founded foundation, therefore the charcoal grey and bright blue lettering gave us a professional, trustworthy visual identity right from the beginning, which was exactly what we needed. But, over time, we as a foundation evolved, and so did our understanding of ourselves. And our wordmark alone was not doing the job any more in representing us to the public. Additionally, we were also facing a practical challenge: As a wordmark works well on websites, presentations, and documents, it quickly reaches its limits when it comes to small spaces. A logomark is like a visual shortcut. As it can stand alongside a wordmark, it doesn’t depend on it – and stands by itself while remaining recognizable. So, we faced the challenge of creating a simple symbol to express the complex landscape of the NeoNephos Foundation.

As you might have guessed, designing a logomark doesn’t mean simply drawing a shape. And before I, as a designer, opened a design software or started drawing drafts on paper, we had to answer the underlying question that defines everything that we do: Who are we? While that sounds like a simple question, the answer depends on two things: What do we actually do and who are we doing it for?

The NeoNephos Foundation is a vendor-neutral foundation fostering a sovereign cloud-native ecosystem for Europe. We connect open-source building blocks into interoperable, modular platforms and provide references and projects to get started with the ecosystem. But we do not build the ecosystem ourselves; we enable others to build it – through coordinating, connecting, and creating neutral ground. When we look at the people we are doing it for, the image of our foundation becomes more complex. Developers come to NeoNephos looking for openness, collaboration, and community. Technical decision makers expect stability, interoperability, and neutrality. And European institutions are looking for sovereignty, governance, and sustainable digital infrastructure. So we are the space, where those stakeholders can meet with their different expectations in mind. We are home for projects, companies, and communities within the ecosystem.

Designing a logomark for the inherently abstract mission of the NeoNephos Foundation wasn’t easy. We are not offering a product and we also don’t operate a cloud platform. We represent various companies with their own independent goals, that come together within the NeoNephos Foundation for one communal goal. The foundation acts as a neutral communication platform for all those stakeholders, having to balance different qualities at the same time. That means we must be technical without being exclusive, professional without feeling corporate and losing the human touch, approachable without losing credibility, and stable without becoming rigid. Our role is to help others to navigate through an increasingly complex cloud-native landscape while creating a reliable framework that others can build upon. All this should be communicated in our visual identity, starting with the new logomark.

The final form of our NeoNephos logomark consists of two curved surfaces moving toward one another. They form a bridge, visually representing the foundation connecting the different stakeholders across the ecosystem. At the same time, the shape points decisively in one direction: Toward an independent and sovereign European cloud ecosystem. The wide base grounds and balances the shape, creating a sense of reliability, permanence, and something solid to build upon. At the same time the triangle is not closed but remains open – just as our work is never finished. NeoNephos is built around open-source principles; our ecosystem is constantly evolving and changing with new projects, new members, growing communities and changing technologies. The open shape suggests adaptability, collaboration, and continuous development. The curved inner edges soften the otherwise geometric shape to introduce a more human and approachable quality.

The logomark is heavy enough to stand on solid ground, and at the same time light enough to move through the cloud-space. It’s stable, yet open, ready to use and still in the making.

Over the past months, we’ve also developed design guidelines that help ensure our communication remains recognizable. These guidelines will continue evolving alongside the foundation. You’ll start seeing the new logomark appear across our different communication channels. New presentation templates are already available, and updated merchandise is currently being prepared.

We’re actively working on making our vision, our mission, and our role as a foundation clearer and more accessible. It’s an ongoing evolvement and, like everything else in the NeoNephos Foundation, it’s a communal European effort.

As alluded to in Advancing Europe's Open Source Agenda through Open Source Software Foundations, supranational sovereignty cannot be forced upon but must be built through community acceptance. Such community acceptance requires trust, which is earned in spades but can easily be lost in buckets. Especially in the age of AI, enterprise hardened open source software demonstrably benefits from a structured development umbrella: Even "simple" projects nowadays often require infrastructure, token credits, a formalized vulnerability management process etc. to gain any meaningful traction in the community. These are all things which may be prohibitive for a small group of hobbyist maintainers. Therefore, to attract contributors in order to advance supranational sovereignty, a shared development vehicle must offer all these facilities and beyond.

On the 7th of May 2026 the NeoNephos Governing Board again held an on-site workshop at SAP in Walldorf. The all-day get-together was filled with presentations, discussions, good food and sometimes contentious but always friendly debates. Everyone shared the goal of wanting to make the foundation better. What emerged was a concrete vision about the future of NeoNephos in the form of a roadmap, which we are proud to present further in this post.

Let's dive through all the points in order.

While applications to the ambassador program are still private as of the time of this writing, behind the scenes the first ambassadors are evaluated. This first set of people have already proven their value to the NeoNephos Foundation in the past and serve as good first candidates to start the ambassador program. We expect to officially announce the onboarding of the first Ambassador in Q2 2026.

The Project Lifecycle policy is one of the most essential documents in the foundation as it sets the conditions, expectations and benefits levied upon prospective and incumbent projects. As stated in the roadmap, we hope to finalize it soon. The development of this document is public and you can contribute here.

NeoNephos lacks a clear logomark yet. Several designs are in the pipeline. The new logomark will be introduced in the coming weeks.

The benefits of sovereignty extend world-wide. Therefore, we are present at the KubeCon+CloudNativeCon India with a talk.

We have to scope much further ahead and let you know a long time beforehand, where we intend to be. That is why we are improving on the process on selecting events for attendance. You know an interesting event we should attend? Let's chat on Zulip!

We acknowledge that we at times lost touch with the needs of our General and Associate Members. Therefore, we made it a fixed target to improve the communication beyond the trimonthly townhall meeting.

Who does what is always important to know. But it is easy to get lost between all the companies and people involved in NeoNephos. Therefore, we will map this out more clearer.

While our Gardener project regularly organizes hackathons, we also plan to do this foundation-wide.

We want to more clearly communicate explicit example, where using projects of NeoNephos has made a difference to end-users.

We will establish a clear visual identity for NeoNephos which affects the website, slides and all content we generate.

While There is no NeoNephos mascott yet, but it is in the works! Including a plush version to hand out at events.

Establish Physical NeoNephos Testlab ​

A physical NeoNephos testlab will be established where you can experiment with our projects on-site. While no location has been selected thus far, we fully believe that the community benefits from such a place.

Establish NeoNephos Conformance Program ​

The conformance program is a key pillar of our long term strategy. More details are to be announced.

Establish Commercialization Program ​

Our members have rightfully asked if there is also a financial benefit from supporting NeoNephos. Investigating these opportunities therefore deserves a spot on the roadmap, with more details to be announced.

Publish Vision Document ​

While we have our goals document, a more concrete vision document is in the works.

Host NeoNephos Master Class ​

There should be training available on how to use our projects. More to be announced.

Closing Words ​

The Roadmap represents the chief outcome of the May Strategy workshop. It also represents the first time that we switched to strategic long-term thinking and mapped out upcoming items long in advance. This is in stark contrast to the short term reactive behavior we exhibited in 2025 and represents a strong indicator that we are maturing as a foundation. We thank all participants for their tireless efforts in helping to improve the foundation further.

One year past our grand foundation launch announcement at the KubeCon+CloudNativeCon '25, it was once again time to meet our peers at the '26 edition of one of the most anticipated events in the cloud native scene. Now, equipped with the fruits of our labor from all these past months, we did not arrive with only grand plans but presented a concrete vision and live demonstrations. Let us break down how below:

Our booth served as our permanent flagpole in the sand amd presented the most initimate way for people to learn about NeoNephos. Thanks to the continuous staffing provided by representatives of our projects, KubeCon attendees were exposed to hands-on demonstrations of some of our projects and could directly ask questions. Many great discussions arose and relationships have formed thanks to this booth. We will be catching up on some of these discussions for sure!

We held many presentations, not only at the KubeCon itself but also the adjacent Open Sovereign Cloud Day. Most importantly, we had multiple companies involved in these, highlighting our belief in cross-company collaboration.

While a lot went well, we can always do better. We hope to have official NeoNephos Ambassadors present at next year's event. Ideally, these Ambassadors have a background from a diverse set of organizations and companies. Thanks to our newly formed Outreach Committee, which manages this program, we believe this wish is within reach.

Confidential Computing Revisited: Usability, Market, Standpoints and Trends ​

Why do we present yet another report on confidential computing (CC)? We realize that publications tend to either focus on performance trade-offs, vulnerabilities or options for improving the technology, whereas concrete guidance on the ease-of-use for customers and service providers can only be found in documentation at various web sites. We also notice in our professional network that there is a wide range of experiences with CC and expectations for the technology. These span from very optimistic perspectives based on early success stories to rather negative assessments from tedious proof-of-concepts, poor performance results or lack of faith in the prospects of the technology.

To achieve a holistic view of the design space for CC, we consider publications, product documentation, product specifications, and interviews with partner organizations as input for our analysis. We particularly focus on CC rooted in virtualization, which carries the potential of widespread future adoption for many use cases in comparison to more rigid approaches. This variant of CC is a relatively recent technology introduced in the 2022 to 2023 time frame by CPUs from AMD (AMD SEV-SNP) and Intel (Intel TDX) for the x86-64 architecture. Our analysis of related work therefore especially covers publications from the last three to four years. In the spirit of the ApeiroRA project and the NeoNephos Foundation, we point out open-source frameworks in this report that complement the CPU technologies.

Major outcomes of our confidential computing (CC) analysis are: • Early market projections for CC are optimistic and consider a CAGR above 25% with the potential to reach a higher capitalization than next-generation computing markets and established markets like HPC within 10 years. Market drivers are threats posed to businesses, society, national security and public safety based on data theft/espionage and attacks against critical infrastructure, supply chains and political systems. • During our interviews with more than 40 professionals from more than 20 partner organizations, we observed more than 30 security and privacy related consortia, standards and regulations listed in this report that may serve as a catalyst for motivating the adoption of the technology for compliance now and in the future. • We group more than 10 case studies into four use-case categories to supplement these insights by describing the actual usage of CC in the field to make the incentive to apply the technology more concrete. • We highlight different aspects of the usability (OS dependencies, VM lifecycle management, attestation hurdles) and trade-offs with respect to performance, costs, security, versatility/service levels and availability associated with using and offering CC services. • Finally, we summarize optimistic, realistic and pessimistic views gathered in our interviews and derive calls-to-action. The majority of the professionals we interviewed are realists. The realist has often already gained experience with CC in proof-of-concept and pilot projects and considers CC at a medium level of technology readiness. Realists may become adopters of CC eventually and recognize the need to prepare organizations (their employers, colleagues and customers) for the deployment of the technology within the next few years.

• As a foundation, we provide a technical overview of the CC technologies, known vulnerabilities and potential improvements shown in research publications, along with complementary security topics. • In the appendix, we offer a short overview of companies active in the areas of enabling new use cases with CC and offering productivity enhancements for deploying CC.

We therefore aim to systematically collect and structure this information in our report to help readers assess value propositions, identify necessary actions, and achieve proper outcomes with confidential computing based on a clear understanding of the maturity of the technology within a defined scope.

According to the mission statement in our charter, NeoNephos advances the goals of the IPCEI CIS. The Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering ISST conducts applied research on smart data ecosystems and contributes to the development of sovereign, interoperable, and sustainable software for the digital economy. More generally, the Fraunhofer Society is a storied name in applied research and has been associated with many breakthrough projects such as the mp3 compression algorithm. NeoNephos, notably hosting the development of an interoperable cloud reference architecture, greatly appriciates the input from "research veterans" who are used to advancing the frontier in unchartered terrain.

We are proud to announce that Open Key Chain Manager has been accepted into NeoNephos!

OpenKCM is a data encryption key management solution, implementing a hierarchical key derivation system that wraps internal encryption keys with customer-managed root keys stored in external keystores , exposing key operations via KMIP protocol.

OpenKCM is the first project that has not been there from the start and therefore passed all many necessary steps prior to being accepted into NeoNephos. We are happy have grown to an additional project and now possess an additional building block in our cloud-native fabric.

On January 8th, the NeoNephos Governing Board got together for an in-person strategy workshop at SAP Walldorf. Great ideas were exchanged and a preliminary vision constructed for how we see NeoNephos in 2026. It was agreed on that one of the first items to do in 2026, was to further formalize our mission, who we are and how we fit into the bigger picture of European cloud native sovereignty. The day has come where we can finally share this document to the world!

The goals document supplements our mission statement in our charter and serves as a first point of reference for people aiming to understand our purpose.

What a year it has been! Although it feels like we have been here for an eternity, it was at the KubeCon 2025 that we announced the launch of the NeoNephos Foundation. By the end of 2025, we have grown to 15 members, with seven of them only joining within the last 6 months. Let us recap this year by looking at key moments that have shaped our foundation:

KubeCon 2025 Walk-On

The year started off strong with our foundation launch announcement at the KubeCon 2025. Set on a grand stage flanked by thousands, we introduced the world to our vision of “Making Cloud Native Sovereign”. At our corresponding booth, at that time with Gardener branding, we noticed great interest in our foundation with 200+ people willing to have their badges scanned for follow-up information.

All Committees formed

NeoNephos is formally organized into a strategic Governing Board, the Technical Advisory Council and the Technical Steering Committees of each project. Since we launched with 11 projects, this means 13 organizational bodies had to be established. This was a huge undertaking because for many it was the first time they had worked in such a manner. Nevertheless, we persisted. By July we had already formed all committees and established a working mode.

Open Resource Discovery API Award

It is always worthwhile to revisit the individual accomplishments of our projects, and Open Resource Discovery winning the API Award in the API Standards & Specifications category in August is definitely among them. For us, it is a reminder of the strength of the projects which shape the NeoNephos portfolio.

Gardener Reaches CNCF AI Compliance

Each of our projects has enterprise readiness in mind. Therefore, gaining and keeping trust is important. We are proud to mention that Gardener is one of the first Kubernetes offerings which has reached the brand new CNCF Certified Kubernetes AI Conformance. Integrating with de-facto standards and community programs shows our commitment for integration within the wider cloud-native ecosystem. We will continue to push our projects to adhere to state-of-the-art conformance programs, as applicable.

Platform Mesh Releases

The year kept going strong with several releases of our Platform Mesh project. This starts by the release of the Getting Started guide, which includes a step-by-step introduction into the project and its components, complete with a local Platform Mesh docker environment. Additionally, the project released version 0.1.0, of course packaged via our Open Component Model project.

NeoNephos joins Zulip

The foundation and its projects needed an organized team chat, suitable for synchronous and asynchronous communication. Zulip was the perfect candidate as it was hosted and endorsed by the Linux Foundation itself. While the start was slow, it is seeing more and more usage. Help out by joining our Zulip today and shape with us the future of cloud native sovereignty!

Project Lifecycle Policy Approved

The year culminated with the approval of a very special document. The project lifecycle policy rules how projects can join the foundation, and the overall roles, responsibilities and benefits a project has with respect to NeoNephos. This is a topic which has led to healthy discussions due to its importance for the foundation as a whole. Nevertheless, we are now in the finish line, having a first version approved by our Governing Board. We are grateful for the continuous feedback we have received from the committee members, the projects, and the Linux Foundation itself during this time. We look forward to unveiling this document to the public soon!

This closes down our highlights for 2025. Overall, we are well positioned for 2026 and look ahead with great excitement. We wish you a happy holiday and can’t wait for you to come back next year, because we are just getting started!

Efficient scheduling of virtual machines, their associated workloads and the underlying infrastructure itself is an active research topic of fundamental importance for infrastructure providers. Because the workload characteristics (and their temporal evolution) are distinct to each datacenter and may involve multiple coprocessors, efficient provisioning is difficult and subject to one's unique constraints. The new "The SAP Cloud Infrastructure Dataset: A Reality Check of Scheduling and Placement of VMs in Cloud Computing" sheds light on this situation, by providing and analyzing telemetry data from 1,800 hypervisors and 48,000 Virtual Machines (VMs), which are part of the SAP Cloud Infrastructure, over a 30-day observation period. It was created as a collaboration between SAP and the TU Dresden. Additionally, Arno Uhlig, Engineering Manager at SAP and member of our CobaltCore project, presented the paper at the ACM Internet Measurement Conference 2025, a prestigious and known venue in this domain.

We’re excited to announce that Open Resource Discovery, a project of the NeoNephos Foundation, has won the 2025 API Award in the Best in API Standards & Specifications category. API World 2025 is the world’s largest API & microservices conference, and the 2025 API Awards are the definitive awards for the API & microservices industry. The 10th annual API Awards celebrate the technical innovation and solutions in the global API economy.

The API economy has matured extensively over the past decade, and Open Resource Discovery is helping API & integration professionals and engineers build the future of APIs in the multi-trillion-dollar market for API-driven products and services in the age of AI.

“Today’s cloud-based solutions are increasingly powered by API-centric architecture and platforms, with renewed focus on APIs with the rise of agentic AI and MCPs. Award winners were selected by the independent, expert-led DevNetwork API Advisory Board, based on criteria including: technical innovation; attracting notable attention and awareness in the API industry; and general regard and use by API and integration communities.

The award will be presented during API World 2025 (Sept 3-5, Santa Clara Convention Center, CA & Sept 10-12, Live Online), the world’s largest international API & integration conference with over 250+ speakers and 50+ global partners.

July has come to a pass. Let’s recap all the important things that happened in July:

On the 18th of July we held the kickoff meeting of our Technical Advisory Council (TAC), officially initiating this very important organizational body. The TAC ensures the technical adherence of the projects to the vision laid out by our Governing Board. The TAC will be spearheaded by the interim chairperson Florian Müller, who will reside in this position for the next three months.

On July 3rd we held our first townhall, inviting all the foundational members to participate. We got to know each other and discussed the timeline of important roadmap items, like the election of a General Member Governing Board Representative. It was a lively discussion and a lot of great ideas were exchanged.

In the week starting July 1st we were present at the CloudLand 2025 with multiple talks featuring our projects. We outlined our holistic approach to a sovereign stack and encountered genuine interest in our focus areas. We were positively surprised by how many attendees already knew about some of our projects.
