What is NeoNephos

The purpose of the NeoNephos Foundation is to raise, budget and spend funds in support of various open source, open data and/or open standards projects relating to the NeoNephos Foundation, as a steward of innovation and collaboration. The NeoNephos Foundation is dedicated to advancing open-source projects that align with the strategic objectives of the European Union’s Important Project of Common European Interest in Cloud Infrastructure and Services (EU IPCEI-CIS). By fostering a vibrant ecosystem of shared technological advancement, the foundation ensures that its initiatives complement and extend the pioneering work of the Apeiro Reference Architecture (apeirora.eu).

In April 2025 the Linux Foundation Europe officially announced the launch of the NeoNephos Foundation, a not-for-profit open source initiative.

NeoNephos is a response to the need of software providers to adapt to an uncertain regulatory environment, by developing solutions that promote digital sovereignty in the cloud-to-edge continuum.

The foundation’s strategic leadership is membership-based while technical contributions are open-to-all. The founding members are SAP, Clyso GmbH, Cyberus Technology, Deutsche Telekom AG, STACKIT, TNO-ECOFED, and 23 Technologies GmbH.

The tools developed under the initiative take an all-encompassing yet modular approach, by targeting select issues in the areas of frameworks, platforms, operating systems and infrastructure.

By embracing Kubernetes beyond mere container orchestration and utilizing its declarative API model,  NeoNephos builds on and fully leverages established design patterns, promoting adoption.

Historically, NeoNephos emerged out of the Apeiro Reference Architecture (ApeiroRA), which is SAP’s contribution to the European-Union-facilitated Important Project of Common European Interest – Next Generation Cloud Infrastructure and Services (IPCEI-CIS).

By donating several of its flagship projects to the foundation, ApeiroRA underpins the technical robustness and enterprise readiness of NeoNephos. In turn, NeoNephos provides a sustainable, shared development model for its projects.
